ISAAK - THE NEWT

CARVING THE NEWT IN MARBLE - PART ONE & TWO

The two videos below show the production of the very large marble newt.

This was produced as a basin for the new gardens at The Newt in Somerset opened in 2024.

The marble chosen is Italian Prata marble, which is used because of its distinctive green colour and heavy figuring.

Originally the design was to have the Newt on a counter top with the basin sunk into its back, but this was changed for a wall mounted installation. Due to the weight of the stone at around 850kg, this created a need for some serious engineering.

The marble continues through the wall with a large tennan secured to a steel sub frame, of which the wall was constructed around.

During the first video you will see the original maquette alongside the marble during production.

The second video shows the newt in situ.

A very satisfying commission and the results speak for themselves.

Please visit The Newt in Somerset and meet my newt, Isaak

A fitting name for a stone that seems to defy gravity.
